Matt Hill founded Sing Omaha in 2007. The organization now serves roughly 350 singers across nine choirs spanning kindergarten through adult, alongside a private lesson studio of about 150 students at two locations.
His own teaching is grounded in bel canto, the classical tradition of voice building, which in practice means teaching a singer how the instrument actually works rather than asking them to imitate a sound. Breath, vowel, and freedom come first, whether a student is preparing a college audition or simply learning to sing for an hour without getting tired. He brings the same approach to the rehearsal room, describing choir as a place where singers should receive real vocal instruction rather than just learning notes.
Dr. Hill is Assistant Professor and Director of Choral Activities at Creighton University, where he conducts the university choirs, and Director of Worship Arts at Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church. He serves as Executive Director of the Nebraska Choral Directors Association and has represented community choirs on the national board of the American Choral Directors Association. He has twice been named Nebraska Choral Director of the Year.
He is also a published composer and author. His choral music is sung by school, church, university, and community choirs, and he has been commissioned by ensembles across the country. He was honored to be selected for the International Choral Composers Institute in 2026 and composed Great is the Sun! for that event. The piece was selected for the final concert, programmed as the closing work, and picked up for publication by Choristers Guild to be released in 2027. His writing on choral leadership and rehearsal craft has appeared in the national Choral Journal, and he regularly appears on national choral podcasts. He is also at work on a forthcoming book for choral conductors titled “The People-First Conductor.”
Dr. Hill lives and works in Omaha with his wife Jen and their son, Walter.
